Burning Calories - Part I
Exercise in intervals.
Can't work out for 30 minutes everyday? Do three 10-minutes sesssions. Take a 10 minute walk. Do calisthenics for 10 minutes. Take a 10-minute swim in the pool. It all adds up.
Check with your doctor.
Always consult with your doctor before starting any weight loss exercise. If you are very overweight, elderly or have never exercised, too much exertion all at once could be hazqardous to your health.
Run with the crowd.
Group exercise like aerobics and martial arts classes are very easy to stick to becasue they are fun and social. There's a feeling that you are all in the fitness thing together.
Exercise in the hot and cold.
If you jog outside in the winter, you burn extra calories becasue your body temperature has to rise to heat itself. Some fitness experts say the same is true when you exercise in the heat. Just be sure to dress appropriately and drink plenty of fluids so your don't become dehydrated.
Park your car in the farthest part of the parking lot.
The safest, well-lit part, that is. Later after unloading your groceries into your car, roll the cart back to the front of the store. You have just had a mini-workout in the midst of your daily errands.
Walk up the stairs.
Take stairs instead of elevators. Stair climbing is a great way to burn calories and reduce stress.
Ditch the remote.
Getting up to change the channel may be painful at first, but it's exercise and it burns a few calories.
Watch TV while on a treadmill or stationary bike.
You don't have to be a couch potato to enjoy your favorite TV program. If you can't give up your beloved sitcoms and infomercials, you can at least burn a few calories while you watch. Walk on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike for 30 minutes while the news or your favorite show is on.
Stop driving everywhere.
Walk to work or the store if you can. If you need a quart of milk and it's only half a mile a way, walk it and carry the milk home.
Do housework.
All those chores that you put off like washing the floor or cleaning the bathroom burn a lot of calories. Spend 30 minutes a day straightening up.
