South Beach, Atkins, Low Carb, Zone ... you name it, they're
talking about it. It's on TV, in magazines... everywhere you

Individuals who are interested in bariatric surgery need to be aware of the ramifications. Although significant weight loss can be achieved with the procedure, patients need to have realistic weight loss expectations. Even after the surgery, most patients will not achieve their ideal body weight. Patients with a lower BMI to begin with generally lose a greater percentage of excess weight, while those with a higher initial BMI will likely lose more total weight. Patients who approach the surgery with a goal of improving their health resulting and quality of life will have the most success.

In an effort to keep the citizens of the United States in shape and healthy, the presidential fitness challenge has been created. As an effort to enthuse both children and adults alike in matters of exercise, in this article, we'll be discussing in-detail the president's plan for fitness success. When it comes to the fitness of children, the presidential fitness challenge has a wide scope. It urges children to perform the following steps: choose an activity, get active, track your activity, and order your award. Children are encouraged to take part in any physical activity that they desire, including such low-intensity workouts as long walks or highly intense sports, such as basketball. The goal that the president's challenge has set is for children to exercise 60 minutes per day for at least 5 days of the week for at least 6 weeks. For those who cannot fully dedicate for a six-week span, however, 8 weeks are allowed in which to complete the required 6. Next, children are encouraged to go online and record their exercise, no matter how mundane it may be. Jogging for 5 minutes constitutes enough of a reason to record the exercise. If children cannot make it to the computer every day, they can file back-logs for their activities for as far back as 14 days prior. Once the goal is reached, the activity log will inform the child that they have met the needs for the presidential fitness award. Pedometers can also be used to monitor exercise progress; for girls aged 6 to 17, 11,000 steps per day should be achieved. Boys aged 6 to 17 should count approximately 13,000 steps per day. If the child wishes to continue the exercise program after receiving the award, they can continue to log their progress and move on to the next challenge if they desire to do so. The presidential champions program gives merit to those who maintain the active lifestyle encouraged by the fitness program.

Modern lifestyles cultivate such habits that are hard to give a skip and to unhealthy practices. Today many view weight control diets as something difficult to practice and that, as something where in you need to keep account of all that you eat. But think of this. Obesity is not fun and good health does not come cheap. Surrendering to quick fix pills like sympathomimetic amine or amphetamine is a serious mistake if you don?t consider the side effects. It works by stimulating central nervous system to increase blood pressure and heart beats and thereby reducing appetite. Naturally, you can?t compromise on your own health. Look around for a natural way to weight loss.

Weight loss surgery falls into three main categories. The first is known as malabsorption surgery and is based upon the principally of allowing the patient to continue to eat normally and then re-routing food through the digestive system so that the body is able to absorb only a small fraction of the calorific value of the food eaten. The second is referred to as restrictive surgery in which the patient's stomach is drastically reduced in size and the quantity of food which the patient can eat, and consequently the number of calories that the body can adsorb, is severely restricted. The third category of surgery is simply a mixture of the first two providing for both a restricted intake and poor calorific absorption.

Many women experience weight gain during the premenstrual phase or the two weeks immediately before their periods. Some of this weight gain is temporary and is caused by fluid retention in the body resulting from hormonal changes. Sometimes, certain food cravings during the premenstrual phase may result in binge-eating that eventually causes weight gain. If a woman has bad period pain, headaches, or mood changes, she may be less likely to adhere to her regular exercise routine. Limited exercise, combined with increased eating, work together to increase weight. Certain antidepressant medications may also cause weight gain as a side effect.

Exercising for weight loss has always meant spending thirty to sixty minutes on a treadmill, stationary bike, elliptical machine, etc. To me, nothing is more boring than running on a treadmill for that long. I did run outside which helped with boredom but my knees took a beating.
One day I found an article in Men?s Health that talked about interval training and how much more effective it is for weight loss when compared to sixty minutes of exercise on a treadmill, jogging at the same pace. What really attracted me to interval training is the length of time required to complete a workout; twenty to thirty minutes.

Stedman?s Medical Dictionary defines obesity as an interruption, cessation, or disorder of body function, system, or organ. Unfortunately, some physicians have not approached obesity as a disease. Studies have repeatedly confirmed that, when seven out of 10 patients walking into primary care clinics are either overweight or obese, physicians are being desensitized to overweight people and view obesity as a state rather than a disease. Physicians are in the best position to address obesity in their patients, but first they need to add it to the checklist of problems as consistently as they would any other disease.

There are various 'laughter clubs' where the members assemble and laugh aloud! It is a sight to watch. The question of hair loss comes up all the time in the LivingAfterWLS community. Is there anything we can do to prevent hair loss or at least decrease the severity of it? Some bariatric centers say there is nothing to be done, that patients have to just live with the hair loss as part of the gastric bypass experience. Other centers say a diet of 70g. protein a day will prevent hair loss. Still other centers recommend taking a daily multi-vitamin and supplemental vitamins intended to improve hair health. I believe in taking a supplemental vitamin that contains silica which is known to improve the health, texture and volume of hair.

Diet trends change more frequently than fashion trends. What's hot today is forgotten about tomorrow. If you constantly cycle through dieting fads, you can actually make it more difficult for yourself to lose weight. When you bounce from diet to diet, you create imbalance in your metabolism. If you don't get the nutrition you need, your body will activate a type of starvation mode. If you deny yourself basic nutrients, your body will start to conserve existing fat reserves. You may lose weight in the short term, but as soon as you begin your normal eating habits again, you're going to be left with slower metabolism. This slower metabolism makes it difficult for you to keep the weight off.

There are few subjects in the world that have had more written about them than how to lose weight. Sad, but true. People are simply obsessed with their weight, and are willing to try any ridiculous fad if it promises to help them shed those pounds and lose those unsightly inches. At the moment, the fashion is for restricted-carbohydrate diets, like Atkins, the South Beach Diet and the GI Diet. These diets make foods like pasta and rice out to be the root of all evil, instead encouraging you to eat high-fat, high-protein foods like meat and dairy products. While this approach does result in weight loss for many people, its long-term health effects are, at best, unknown, with most nutritionists agreeing that such a diet would most probably be harmful if it was kept to for a long time.

Anorexia nervosa is a complex eating disorder that is
characterized by a poor self-image, which ultimately leads to self-starvation and extreme weight-loss. About one percent of all adolescent females have anorexia, while only 10 percent of total anorexia cases are men. The reason why females are more susceptible to anorexia
probably stems from the demands that society places on young women to be thin.
A new trend among young adults has been sweeping the nation: pro-anorexia
websites. Also known as pro-ana, these sites glorify
anorexia nervosa and offer "thinspiration"
on maintaining a starvation lifestyle. All pro-anorexia websites have one thing
in common - they promote anorexia nervosa.

In the early weeks after having weight loss surgery almost all patients report resenting normal eaters. Some go as far to say the normal eaters flaunt their food consumption to make the WLS patient, who is eating meals the size of a chicken egg, feel inferior. In fact, this resentment has caused disputes among married couples and families. What is odd is that normal eaters don?t realize how resentful the WLS patient feels. The normal eater is doing what they have always done and it doesn?t feel unnatural. Seldom will a normal eater admit to purposefully consuming normal amounts of food in front the WLS patient simply to cause resentment.

We hear it all the time?lose weight for your health. Few people however, realize the extent to which this is critical to their physical well-being and ultimately their life expectancy. In January 2003, the Journal of the American Medical Association featured a study finding that obesity appears to lessen life expectancy, especially among young adults. The researchers compared Body-Mass Index (BMI) to longevity and found a correlation between premature death and higher BMIs. For example, a 20-year-old white male, 5?10? weighing 288 pounds with a BMI of greater than 40 was estimated to lose 13 years of his life as a result of obesity.Jamie McManus, M.D., F.A.A.F.P. and author of ?Your Personal Guide to Wellness? notes that while this study referenced extreme levels of obesity, there are still millions of overweight people in developed countries with a life expectancy rate that is three to five years less than their healthy-weight counterparts. She also estimates that there are 600,000 obesity related deaths each year in America.

The use of drugs to facilitate weight loss, burn more fat or minimize obesity has been the Holy Grail of many weight watchers. Have you noticed since your WLS and return to regular eating a meal often causes you to become sleepy? Seriously sleepy. Drop your head in your plate sleepy. This happens to me all the time. And there?s a good reason for it. When we eat the body produces a rise in blood sugar and a surge in insulin production. This chemical activity sends tryptophan to the brain where it becomes serotonin that signals the body ?Take a nap!? Here come the nods, the yawns and the blinking eyes. WLS patients are highly susceptible to post meal sleepiness because of the shortened route to the small intestine. From there the tryptophan has a fast ride to the brain shouting almost like Paul Revere ?The Sleepies are coming! The Sleepies are coming!?

A mini tummy tuck is a good option if there is not a lot of excess skin to remove, and the patient is interested in minimizing a bulging lower abdomen.

People ask, ?What is hoodia??, because, until recently, it was commonly used by only a small group of South African natives. The San or Bushmen, commonly referred to as San Bushmen, are believed to have lived in southern Africa for at least 20,000 years. Living in areas surrounding the Kalahari Desert, the Bushmen are familiar with the hoodia gordonii and have used it to suppress appetite and hunger during long hunts. This practice inspired the modern use of pure hoodia gordonii products by dieters.

Other succulents like aloe provide the active ingredients in many patented medicines and are considered safe for most people. If hoodia side effects are similar to those of aloe, then it should not be used by pregnant women. Aloe increases menstrual flow and is used to treat amenorrhea, which is a lack of menstrual periods in women of child-bearing age.

Maybe you?ve heard about body dysmorphia ? it?s a mental image many victims of anorexia nervosa have that tells them they look fat, even when they are emaciated. Bariatric patients can suffer from body dysmorphia as well. When we were morbidly obese our emotional coping mechanisms kicked in and many of us were able to convince ourselves we really weren?t that big. It is emotionally kinder to avoid body criticism, the whole issue seems hopeless. In fact, many morbidly obese patients will say they see themselves normal sized. That is until a rude moment reminds them they are not normal sized: a skinny chair, a turnstile, a bathroom stall, a flight of stairs, a photograph. This false perception is a subconscious coping strategy to protect us from the brutal truth, the truth about how big morbidly obese really is.

With all the emphasis on low-carb diets that made the news for so long, it seems that the emphasis on low-carb is not as prevalent as it once was. Why is this? Where did the low-carb diets go? The popularity of Atkins and the South Beach diets may come and go, but the bottom line is that any successful diet--whether low-carb, low-fat, body type, blood type, or whatever the gimmick--has one thing in common. It cuts calories. Low-carb diets cut calories by reducing carbohydrate intake. Low fat diets reduce calories by reducing fats.

You should not diet during pregnancy because it is vital that you supply your body and unborn baby with an adequate number of nutrients. What you can do however to minimize your weight gain is to ensure that you eat a healthy selection of foods during your pregnancy.

Most Americans do not get enough calcium in their diets; the average daily intake is 500 milligrams shy of the RDI (Recommended Daily Intake) of 1,000 to 1,500 milligrams. Gastric bypass patients are even more unlikely to intake adequate dietary calcium and without supplementation they may become calcium deficient which ultimately results in osteoporosis. Weight loss surgery patients are limited by the volume of calcium rich foods they may consume. In addition, the malabsorption issue resulting from gastric bypass presents another problem. Since the bowel does not readily absorb calcium and the stomach is drastically shortened there is limited opportunity for the calcium to be absorbed in the body.

Is hoodia a good diet aide? If hoodia success is measured by the number of people who report positive results then hoodia is a good diet aide for about 50-60% of the people who have tried it. As with other appetite suppressants and health supplements, results vary. Will hoodia alone help me lose weight? Although the answer to the question ?is hoodia a good diet aide? may be yes for many people, hoodia gordonii is only an appetite suppressant. It must be used as part of a complete weight loss program.

Going out to eat can really put the brakes on your weight loss program unless you have exceptional control over what you eat. Although many restaurants now offer choices for many types of diets, it's whats on the rest of the menu that might tempt you to stray. Often high in salt, sugar and oil most restaurant food tends to be higher in calories that what you might prepare for yourself.

Many people have heard about African hoodia. News reporters have traveled to Africa to sample the plant. Pharmaceutical companies are currently working on a prescription medication which makes use of the South African hoodia gordonii plant. Many health supplement companies are marketing products which claim to contain African hoodia for use by dieters as natural appetite suppressants. While most of these companies are undoubtedly delivering reliable and high quality products, there have been reports which state that some of these products do not contain South African hoodia gordonii, at all. So, how can the consumer be sure that what he or she is buying is genuine?

Q: I have a quick question. What effect, if anything, does beer drinking post athletic activities, i.e.; hockey games, have on the body? I'm talking roughly 2-3 beers starting within 5 minutes of getting off the ice. Thanks Craig! Answer:
Drinking makes you more attractive, funnier, and more charming to the opposite sex, according to studies from the Coors Research Institute.

After six years of living with gastric bypass I?ve finally come into a regular eating routine where I no longer fight against the gastric bypass nor do I battle the head games associated with eating restriction. I don?t believe what I do day-to-day is perfect but I know it works for me giving me optimum energy and good health. Over time I?ve found if I strictly control my food choices for breakfast and lunch I can allow a bit more freedom and adventure in my evening meal. In fact, I enjoy wonderful variety and flavor in my evening meals. I seldom snack which I believe is the key to having maintained my weight loss.

Gastric bypass surgery has become more popular than ever thanks to a number of celebrities who have gone public with their stories. Sharon Osbourne, Al Roker, Carnie Wilson, Randy Jackson, Roseanne Barr and Diego Maradona have all undergone weight loss surgery under the public eye. These celebrities make gastric bypass surgery seem easy, but the truth is that it is a serious and complicated surgery and not something to undertake lightly. It should only be used as a last resort when serious dieting and exercise do not work. In our want-it-now society, it may seem like a good quick fix, but the longterm effects must be considered.

Yes, amazing is it not? Despite the fact that the fitness industry is booming?there are obviously still significant problems in America with people loosing weight and being able to keep it off. Pills alone are obviously not the answer. There are documented facts that state that more than half of American adults are unable to lose excess fat, in spite of their exercise and diet efforts.

Many people want to lose weight and nothing seems to work?low cal; high protein; no carbohydrates, etc. Of course, nearly everyone drops a few pounds, but then they gain it back, and sometimes more. On a conscious level, people blame it on a sweet tooth, lack of exercise, or genetics. No matter the explanation there is something going on at a deeper level that is holding you back, and that is fear. Yes, fear. How could that be?

A common claim from gastric bypass detractors is that after surgery patients can never be nutritionally healthy and they must take daily vitamin supplements just to survive. It is a mistaken notion that weight loss surgery patients cannot lead a nutritionally sound life. The assumption is due to the restrictive and malabsorptive nature of the surgery it is impossible to eat a nutritionally sound diet. However, when healthy food choices are combined with a solid vitamin and mineral supplement program bariatric patients do enjoy sound nutritional health. In fact, after surgery, most weight loss patients are more nutritionally healthy than before surgery.

It is common for new WLS patients to ask, ?How soon after surgery will I get back to normal?? This is understandable. We?ve spent a lifetime dieting for the short-term ? the 30-day diet, the six-week program, the lose-ten-pounds-over-the-weekend diet. Remember thinking, "If I can stick with this plan for just 10 days, then I can go back to normal.? The diet industry has conditioned us to think long-term lifestyle changes are unnecessary to accomplish weight loss. We are impatient and demanding, we want a quick fix. Expectations are unrealistic and result in failure, disappointment and self-loathing.

Our LivingAfterWLS frequent contributor and my good friend Kim Stover underwent a surgical thigh lift yesterday. She is home today recovering nicely and has found a way to use the computer laying down. For the next two weeks she must lay down or stand, she cannot be in a sitting position. I look forward to update from her soon. Though not often talked about a thigh lift is a common procedure following massive weight loss. For women it is biologically naturally to carry much fat in the thighs so when weight is lost excessive loose skin remains.

In the first half of the 20th century, lung cancer in women was extremely atypical. In addition to that smoking wasn't very ubiquitous. Unfortunately, that soon changed when the tobacco industry started targeting women. In 1964, the first Surgeon General's Report on Smoking and Health was released and it became clear that smoking was a deadly habit which engulfed 45 percentages of women all over. A media campaign followed and smoking rates began to fall, as did tobacco industry profits. But the rates declined more in men than women; the tobacco industry had started their own media campaign, once again marketing directly to women.

Everyone knows that the best way to lose weight is through diet and exercise. Diet and exercise are not necessarily the fastest ways to lose weight, though. Why are diet and exercise the best way to lose weight, even though they are not always the fastest? Well, although diet pills or even more extreme measures like gastric bypass surgery, stomach stapling, or even anorexia and bulimia may quickly reduce a person?s weight, they are not always the healthiest measures (especially the latter two!).

The use of staples to section off part of the stomach and create a smaller stomach to facilitate weight loss was born out of the experience of the Russians who developed a number of instruments to staple various parts of the body as a quick method of dealing with casualties during the Second World War. American surgical instrument manufacturers then adapted and refined the instruments used by the Russians to create many of the surgical stapling instruments that are used today.

Below, you will see a list of 9 things you can do to promote a healthy weight loss program. However, the title says "11 Steps to Successful Weight Loss"! What gives? You see, I will begin almost any discussion of weight loss with the reminder that the two cornerstones of any healthy weight loss program will be proper nutrition and activity. Notice, I did not say "diet", and the only reason I did not say "exercise" is because the word tends to scare people off. Exercise is huffing and puffing and feeling bad, while "activity" can be a walk in the park - literally and figuratively.

Those on the long road to weight loss have often used a weighing scale as their guide. After all, their main goal is to lose weight. But a scale weighs every bit of you ? your fat, bones, muscle, what you just ate or drank ? and ultimately, the number that appears on your weighing scale is not the most important number. A more important number ? a number that means more in terms of overall health ? is your percent body fat. As most of us have heard, muscle indeed weighs more than fat. A regular scale may show a person that he has remained the same weight after weeks of working out, and this can be very upsetting and slightly askewed news.

You can forget about making New Year?s Resolutions if you?re hoping for a successful outcome. Most aren?t worth the paper they?re written on. No less than Mark Twain has written of New Year?s Resolutions, ?Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual. Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink, and swore his last oath. Today, we are a pious and exemplary community. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever.?

There are many reasons people choose to have gastric bypass surgery. But there are also many risks involved with the surgery as there are with any invasive medical procedures. Many gastric bypass patients report frequent spells of dizziness. In general they are using the word dizzy to describe everything from feeling faint or lightheaded to feeling weak or unsteady. Research indicates a state of chemical imbalance can lead to temporary bouts of dizziness. When a bariatric patient feels dizzy it could very well be related to the restricted diet. Most commonly going too long between meals or not drinking enough water causes bariatric patients to become dizzy or have a mild electrolyte imbalance. Many patients self-treat dizziness by drinking water or little sips of a sports drink such as Gatorade.
