Since gastric bypass weight loss surgery gives us a second chance of leading healthy lives it behooves us to pay attention to what we eat and incorporate things in our limited diet that can aid our health and longevity. Fortunately for us one of the healthiest things we can eat is also gastric bypass friendly: Fish. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish) at least two times a week. Fish is a good source of protein and doesn?t have the high saturated fat that fatty meat products do. Fatty fish like mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon are high in two kinds of omega-3 fatty acids.

Recently a woman went public in her online diet community with her decision for gastric bypass surgery. She was asking for fellowship and support from fellow dieters. What she received was a public cyber-stoning from hostile opinionated and poorly informed sanctimonious people. I was a bit taken back by the arrogance of some respondents: that if Lisa simply had the willpower she could lose the weight.

Everybody wants to be fit. Everybody wants to be sexy. That is so because it really pays to look good. The endeavor to look good, however, must be done in a healthy way. It is not just about the aesthetics. It is also about the body that is the temple of your soul. Thus, one must do the right decisions when it concerns the overall health.

Female gastric bypass patients are at risk of iron deficiency because iron found in meat, poultry and fish is normally absorbed by the duodenum and small intestines. The nature of the bypassed system prevents adequate iron from foods from being absorbed. In addition, patients cannot physically eat enough food to meet the Daily Reference Intake (DRI). If a person is short on iron they suffer a loss of energy, low-level fatigue ? the blahs! To avoid iron deficiency and the resulting loss of energy weight loss surgery patients must take an iron supplement daily. Brain activity, breathing, cellular respiration and every activity of the body depend on iron in the blood. Rosy cheeks and a glowing complexion indicate iron needs are met. Energy levels are up and an overall sense of wellness pervades.

Do you remember nodding your head with understanding during your pre/post WLS seminar when the speaker said, ?Gastric bypass is only a tool, the rest is up to you.? I nodded my head to the nurse dietician as she spoke to the room of fresh-out-of-surgery gastric bypass patients. We thought we understood ?only a tool.? But the words ?only a tool? are vague. It would be more accurate to tell new patients, ?I?m sending you back into the very world that made you fat. Nothing in your environment has changed. In fact, the only thing that has changed is you ? every external force that acted upon you 10-days ago is still out there. You are going to have to claw and fight your way in that same world resisting the habits and instincts that caused you to be obese in the first place. The only weapon you have is a little stomach and impaired absorption system ? this is the tool. You will still have emotional highs and lows, days of self-doubt and days of celebration. There will be food pushers, saboteurs and cheerleaders along the way, but the burden is on you to use the tool.?

Fad diets and quick weight loss gimmicks have grown in popularity over the last several years. Yet, one thing remains clear among most experts: A healthy diet combined with exercise is the key to losing weight and keeping it off. When you are trying to lose weight, it is important to reduce the number of calories in your diet. You can do this by making healthy food choices and watching your portion sizes, but you should not starve yourself or use fad diets. A healthy diet includes:

LivingAfterWLS reader feedback indicates snacking is the single biggest problem for people after having gastric bypass ? the problem being we snack on unhealthy items, we sabotage our weight loss or weight maintenance and we spiral back into the self-loathing that is so much an emotional part of morbid obesity. None of us goes into surgery expecting to be the one ?who lost all that weight and put it back on.? None of us goes into surgery expecting to become sneak eaters. We all believe we can beat obesity with our ?tool? and we all expect to become healthier, more active, and yes dare I say more attractive and happier after WLS and massive weight loss.

Here are a few things this bariatric zealot has learned the last few years:

Establishing a realistic gastric bypass surgery price is extremely difficult and will vary widely from one individual to the next. Nevertheless, it is possible to establish a starting point and to give some general pointers to assist in getting a rough estimate of what you might be looking at. Prices for minimally invasive restrictive surgery, such as gastric banding, will start at around about $15,000 while mixed surgeries, such as a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, will come in at about $25,000. In both cases these figures will cover the costs of surgery and hospitalization in a standard medical facility and assume that there are no complications. If you decide to engage the services of a world renown surgical team in a leading facility the costs could of course be considerably higher.

The controlled study is one of the largest ever to look at obesity in pregnancy, following more than 16,000 pregnant women at 14 medical centers across the country. Compared with women of normal weight, obese and morbidly obese pregnant women were at greater risk for gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, fetal birth weight greater than 4,000 grams, and fetal birth weight greater than 4,500 grams, the study finds.

I?m a diet expert. No, really. I lived with an obese person for nearly 20 years and we experienced every diet known to man. My wife was between 50 to 150 pounds overweight during that timeframe. Though I can?t possibly remember all of them, I know she tried Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Slimfast, the Grapefruit diet, the Egg diet, the Zone, Adkins, and other carb-less plans. With varying degrees of success, she lost between 10 and 65 pounds with each diet over the two decades of attempts, gaining back all of the losses and then some. During that time, I finally learned why they all failed, which I will now share.

If one considers that the usual 12 ounce soda cup has recently reached the 20 ounce size, it is not difficult to understand why bigger food portions have directly influenced people's understanding on what should be considered normal or reasonable and what not. From the bread slices to the French-fries one orders at a local take away, increased portions have led consumers to demand to receive more for the price they pay. If one is served the older portions he or she will immediately compare it to the new increased size a restaurant now serves and this will seem tremendously small to fulfill anyone's hunger. In fact, if you serve a five-year old the portion of ice-cream he or she should be served you will probably have to deal with their whining as the smaller scoop size will seem small and inappropriate to cover their need.

Along the road through those four phases are lots of bumps and bruises, but also many celebrations and successes.

New gastric bypass patients say they miss food, they grieve the loss of food, they yearn for their old foods. Some describe it like the death of a beloved friend. The foods patients grieve for are sweets and baked goods, pasta with heavy sauces, and salty snacks. Mourning for lost foods is a natural step in the re-birth process after weight loss surgery (WLS).

In many cases conventional dieting wisdom simply doesn?t work for gastric bypass weight loss surgery patients. Surgery changes the rules. For example after gastric bypass patients will seldom eat leafy green salad and never in large quantity, it?s too difficult for the gastric bypass system to handle. So conventional diet wisdom seldom applies to the WLS community. However, some rules can work in concert with the gastric bypass as patients adopt a healthier lifestyle and more rational respect for food.

Grazing through the December holidays is a common American practice. Beginning at Thanksgiving and continuing through New Year?s we gather with family and friends and surround ourselves with vast quantities of delicious foods. On many such days we eat all day long and then sit down to a bountiful meal and eat some more. After Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) this day-long grazing is a catastrophic habit to indulge. The reconstructed stomach pouch, which holds about one-cup of food volume, protects WLS patients from over-eating at the dinner table. But it is entirely possible for a WLS patient to graze through the day and consume over 1,500 calories noshing on traditional appetizers. This is thin ice for WLS patients because grazing allows us to out-eat the pouch. Grazing is the number one reason patients report weight gain after weight loss.

Do you believe that drinking lots of water will help you lose weight? This is a myth. Drinking extra water with meals will not reduce the amount of food that you eat. If you drink several glasses of water with your meals, the extra water will distend your stomach and make you feel full for a minute or two, but the water leaves your stomach so quickly that you feel hungry again. The only stimulus to make you stop eating is to take in enough food to make you feel full and satisfied. Water has no calories and does not satisfy hunger.

If you're seriously overweight and want to do something about it, then you may have come across the idea of gastric bypass surgery. It certainly has been shown to be a great way of losing a lot of weight. However you need to realize that this is a major surgical procedure, and so shouldn't be undertaken on a whim. Like any surgery, there are risks and possible complications that can occur, and it's important to discuss these with your surgeon before the operation.

The first rule for successful weight loss and weight maintenance after Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) is Protein First ? that means eating protein for three daily meals, and protein must be 50 percent of food intake. Some bariatric centers advise as much as 70 grams of protein a day. The gastric bypass diet should be high-protein, low-carbohydrate and low-volume. This is what successful WLS patients will eat for the rest of their life if they wish to maintain weight loss after surgery.

The five meals a day plan makes sense on so many levels. For starters, five meals a day will help curb your appetite. The more frequently you eat, the less prone to hunger you are. The object isn't to eat five full meals every day, the goal is to distribute your nutrition throughout the day. With five meals a day, you're never too full or never too hungry. When you eat a huge meal you can feel kind of sluggish afterwards. When you go too long without eating you feel weak and tired. By stretching out your food consumption, you can avoid the peaks and valleys of hunger.

Since awareness of the dangers of obesity became widespread, many strategies have emerged to counteract the condition. However, there was no concrete basis that determines if a person is in fact obese or not. People back then assumed that extreme fatness is obesity. This changed in 1996 when a Belgian statistician and anthropometrist Adolphe Quetelet developed the Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI estimates the amount of body fat in order to determine obesity and its severity much like a thermometer measuring the degree of temperature. To calculate BMI, a subject?s weight (in Kilograms) is divided by the square of the subject?s height (in meters) as shown in the equation: BMI=kg/m2. the resulting value is then compared to an index of numbers that defines being underweight with a BMI of less than 18.5, normal at a BMI range of 18.8 to 24.9, overweight at a BMI range of 25.0 to 29.8, obese at a BMI range of 30 to 39.9 and morbidly obese at BMI of 40.0 or higher. These definitions were agreed upon and published in the year 2000. Since its release, it has been relied on to determine a specific status of obesity and related risks.

I have always struggled to keep my weight under control. Being over-weight affected my whole life, I was unable to wear the clothes I wanted to and I often felt guilty after eating certain foods. There's a dirty little secret in the diet industry. The sellers of weight loss programs won't admit it, but no weight loss plan works for everyone. In fact, all diets fail MOST OF THE TIME! Don't we all have a friend who can eat and eat without gaining a pound? Clearly, we're not all the same, so if you try a weight loss plan that "works for everyone," and still can't lose weight, don't get discouraged. Get a new plan - one that works for you.

The most often repeated complaint about weight loss diet plan is that it doesn't work as much as was expected. We relate intake and output very closely. Therefore, to our mind if we eat more we grow bulkier, so we should shrink like a washerman's thumb when we cut down on eating. But that doesn't seem to happen. We cut down our eating by kilos and the reduction is in millimeters. Quite discouraging it is, but there is a valid reason behind it. The equation is not as easy as it seems on the surface. Dieting is not only about our will power to stay away from food but it is all about taking balanced nutritional diet so that the body doesn't store food without having to suffer on account of malnutrition. Here are a few points that you must keep in mind when you start dieting for weigth loss.

Losing those fats can be so easy for people who have the money to spare and the courage to go under the knife. Procedures like liposuction and mesotherapy have gained popularity in recent years because of its really fast results. In no time, one can lose those fats. What people don?t know though is that fats that are so easily lost can turn up just as easily without the discipline to go with it. This is the reason why most people who go under the knife to lose weight do so again and again. They just can?t maintain the weight because of improper eating habits and lack of physical activity.

In the early 20th century, Joseph Pilates developed a physical fitness system, known today around the world under his name: Pilates. According to its developer, Pilates is a method of using the mind to control the muscles. Since it focuses on the muscles that are responsible for a person's posture, providing spine support is the main goal of this fitness set. By using repetitive exercises of breathing and spine alignment, Pilates is a holistic physical experience, through which a person's body learns again how to move correctly and coordinate the body's movements via one's mind.

Think about all the numbers there are to keep track of, how many pounds do you need to lose, in how many weeks do you need to lose it? How many inches is your waist and how many should it be? What is your body fat and what should it be? When you look at this is way, it is easy to see why so many people have trouble losing the weight they want to lose.

First, there were diets that had a commandment: "thou shall not eat?" That didn't last for long with most people- either they gave up or just didn't get to stick around to enjoy life. Then came water diets where you get the feeling of fullness but not actually get any calories. That didn't last long either. The all- you- can- meat fest type of diets may seem sound but based on the long- term results, people who tried this didn't lose much weight compared to those who didn't go for protein- enriched diets.

Nothing is more disappointing than hearing a gastric bypass patient brag that they didn?t have to exercise to lose weight. It?s true; patients will lose weight without lifting a finger. In fact, for many, the lack of physical effort required to lose weight is an appealing part of weight loss surgery. But patients who do not use the time of rapid weight loss to incorporate exercise into their lifestyle are doing themselves a grave disservice.

Losing weight can feel like an overwhelming task. But it's not as hard as it seems - nor as complicated. Your weight loss can be fast and simple - if you choose the right diet or weight loss plan. The problem today is not that we don't know how to lose weight - but that we don't know which method to choose. There are countless diets and weight loss plans out there - and many of them do work for some people. But not every diet will work for you. You don't want to waste valuable time and energy on a diet that doesn't work.

We've all done it, well at least those of us who have dieted. We have lost weight only to regain the pounds in a matter of weeks or months. Don't get frustrated and give up, there is hope! For starters you have to realize that weight loss programs do work if they are followed correctly. It is also necessary to combine exercise along with a balanced diet and adequate water intake regardless of what specific diet plan you have decided to follow. Sorry, all the late night hype commercials that tell you can lose 30 pounds just by taking a pill and laying on the couch are just that, hype! The only way you will lose 30 pounds that easily is by cutting off a leg. The key to a healthy diet plan is to find one that you can follow long term; it has to be a lifestyle change. The short term crash diets are the biggest reason for failure to keep the weight off.

Perhaps you've had them too, nightmares about rice cakes, granola, and eight glasses of water a day. Do visions of diet supplements, green tea and mechanical scales dance through your head? There is always another diet book on the bookshelf, which claims to be better than the previous books and will really help you lose weight faster, easier and better or so the makers claim. The same is also true of exercise and weight loss machines such as an elliptical trainer; there is always a better system or machine around the corner. But in a few weeks, or months, the next big elliptical trainer appears and leaves the other machines as part of a bad fitness dream.

Have a conversation about gastric bypass surgery with just about anyone and you will hear, ?Yeah, I know someone who had that done and within a year they stretched out their stomach and regained all that weight ? plus some.? Unfortunately it is true that some weight loss surgery (WLS) patients do regain their weight after losing it. What isn?t true is that they stretch their stomachs back to pre-surgical size. At best, a post gastric bypass stomach will expand from a capacity of 2 tablespoons to one-cup capacity. This is expected and part of the reason gastric bypass is successful. In the phase of rapid weight loss the patient cannot eat more than once ounce of food at a time. As the stomach heals and the weight loss stabilizes the stomach can eventually hold up to a cup of food at a time.

Obesity has been a world wide problem, even as a silent epidemic in developed countries. Diabetes on the other hand has been one of the most difficult to treat human diseases. Put the two together and you have an endemic that would test the limits of science in saving lives ? the peril of obesity and diabetes. Although not all diabetes are a result of obesity (and not all diabetics are/become obese), more and more studies have been developed to prove the increase in the percentage of diabetes disease as a result of excessive weight gain. As one of the crucial consequence of obesity, diabetes is the final detriment in the life expectancy of an obese person. How so?

The desire for quick weight loss is common and is easy to achieve.
Lose 1 pound overnight? Lose 2 pounds by next Tuesday? No problem to
do it .... however you must realize that you are not losing fat but
water; your waist will not measure 1 inch less and your thighs will
not be leaner. To have a weight loss that is both noticeable and lasting you need to
make changes to both your diet and your lifestyle. A quick weight
loss should be thought of in terms of one pound per week, not per day.

Most experts in the field of health and nutrition would agree that the last 20 years have been one of the worst times in the history of health and well being because more and more people suffer from world?s largest ?epidemic?? obesity. Studies also show that the risk factors of obesity also include heart disease, sleep apnea and other breathing problems, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, gallbladder diseases, and various forms of cancer. Since there are so many health risks involved, people who are obese or morbidly obese are finding solutions that can help them lose weight easily.

How is one to decide whether he has become obese or not? The most acceptable method to determine it is the calculation of BMI or Body Mass Index. A person with a BMI of 30 or above is termed as obese. Obesity has much to do with the fat content in the body. Fats are deposited under the layer of skin. It helps someone get energy when he is without food for long. Apart from that it also finds its usage in regulating body temperature, insulating and cushioning vital organs and tissues. Fats are an essential need of the body but excess possession of it is not recommended for good health.

Loss in every situation can not be considered as the loss. Some losses are the forerunners of gain. You will be happy with certain losses. The immediate example is, if you are overweight and if in the course of diabetes treatment, you lose weight, it is the cause for elation. It will substantially help you bring your diabetes under control. The statistics related to diabetes all over the world are appalling. 7% of the population of USA is affected by diabetes. In every 10 dollars spent on health care, 1 dollar is spent on treatment related to diabetes. So, what is needed is constant monitoring of diabetes. That is right type of medications at the right time. Have a regular schedule of exercises and a good diet system. And above all, take proper steps to manage and control your body weight.

Every weight loss surgery patient I?ve met said they at sometime during the weight loss experience felt like a fraud. A fraud is someone who pretends to be what they are not, an imposter. Given this definition, of course we feel like a fraud! Almost overnight we become the exact opposite of what we have been for many years. We are in fact a fat person masquerading in a thin body. Of course we feel like a fraud!

Body temperature is the result of your body generating and radiating heat. The body is adept at keeping its temperature within a narrow range even though ambient air conditions vary. A normal body temperature is 98.6?F. It is common during the period of rapid weight loss for bariatric patients to feel cold or chilled, even when their temperature reads normal. People who experience the massive weight loss associated with weight loss surgery experience feeling cold for two reasons: loss of insulation and less energy generation.

I had lost nearly fifty pounds before anyone mentioned my weight loss. Then, all of the sudden, everybody noticed! As soon as they noticed the questions began. The most often asked: ?How much weight have you lost?? People who I barely knew asked me this question as if it were their right to know. I was never sure of the motive for the question? Did they want to celebrate my weight loss? Did they want to gasp knowing just how fat I was?

Often you see articles on obesity and the health risks associated with being severely overweight. Carrying an extra 20, 50, or 100 pounds or more can put great strain on your back, your muscles, your heart, and even your mental health. You might think it stands to reason, therefore, that if being obese is bad, then the extreme opposite - being very skinny - is good.

A frequent question brand-new gastric bypass patients ask is ?How do you deal with the loss of food?? In the first few weeks out of surgery when patients can only eat is Jell-O or protein shakes or broth patients frequently report grieving for food. After all, food is a beloved friend of the morbidly obese. Now it?s gone and emotional grieving results. The sense of loss is magnified during the post-op healing phase because patients don?t feel well enough to do anything. That leaves time to focus on the foods we loved but are no longer allowed.

Abdominoplasty surgery is a surgical procedure that will attempt to address the problem of loose skin that normally occurs after drastic weight loss. More popularly known as a tummy tuck, the procedure is a major one that sees the surgeon cut away excess loose skin, sew together abdominal muscles and finally close by sewing back the remaining skin. Tummy tuck surgery results vary from patient to patient. To get a good idea of possible outcomes ? especially in terms of scarring ? it is a good idea to have a look at before and after pictures of tummy tucks. There are also pictures of what the actual procedure would look like but you might want to avoid these if you cannot stand the sight of blood. By learning about tummy tucks and looking at relevant pictures, your fear of a tummy tuck can be better addressed since the procedure and the outcome would not be a mystery anymore.

It is done by securing or sealing off the stomach to reduce the amount of food one can eat, then rearrange the small intestine to reduce the calories the bodies can absorb. Bariatric surgical procedures are only considered for people with severe obesity. Bariatric surgery for obesity is categorized by surgical technique.

What is cellulite? I hear you ask. This is a very common question. Cellulite is normally to be found on a woman's buttocks, thighs, tummy, and possibly arms. It is simply a name for the appearance of bumpy, rippled, dimpled, looking fat on the individual?s body. Cellulite is a widespread problem that can affect any woman as she ages. This occurs when connective tissues under the skin that shape the fat become weaker and then deform owing to poor or restricted circulation. According to a study carried out by the American academy of dermatology, cellulite can be the body's natural way of storing fat.

The joy of being a mom is incomparable; but the joy of a woman having a lovely body is another thing. Most women have the misconception that once you have your baby, then it is only normal to not be to able to return to your original slim-figure. This may be correct, but only in part. The amount of weight gained after childbirth is determined ?normal? only under set considerations. What the new mom needs to know first is to realize that there may be a possible correlation between her pregnancy and obesity.

Dieting ? in theory and mathematically ? is simple. If you consume fewer calories then your body burns in the course of a day, you will lose weight. Plain and simple. Of course, for most of us this remains a concept that is only successful in theory. In practice, it can be extraordinarily difficult to cut calories while raising the rate at which we burn them through exercise.

In today's modern culture wherein Paris Hilton is the goddess and the abs of Usher are every man's goal, more and more people are into dieting. Unfortunately, a lot still fall into the diet myth trap out of their desire and eagerness to fit into a size 2. The worse thing though is not only the fact that these myths are widespread, but that these diet myths, when practiced, have adverse effects on the body.

Gone are the days when women have to starve themselves to death before getting back their pre-motherhood or pre-binging figures. Instead of doing it the hard way, most people want to lose inches the fastest way possible. One of the most popular methods for losing flab on the tummy, buttocks or even the chin is liposuction. Liposuction is the process of removing excess fat by inserting a stainless tube and pumping the fat out of the target area with the help of a vacuum.

What is the secret to losing weight? Carefully monitor what you eat and expend more energy than you consume. Sounds simple, doesn?t it? However, if losing weight is really that simple, there would not be so many overweight people. Obesity is quickly becoming an epidemic in this country. Why has it become such a problem? Too much stress, too little exercise, poor eating habits and a rushed way of life are all contributing factors. Losing weight is NOT simple.
